Numeral Curve
Within dance everything is counted in eights and to start a dance we count ‘5,6,7,8’. I did some research into this that shows the origins of the counts in dance are due to the music and how it is also composed in counts of eight. So instead of designing a typeface based on movement I was inspired to design a set of numbers 0-9, purely because this is the language that transcends any dance. These numbers are designed with movement in mind and when put together really do dance around the page.
Using the typeface I projected it over myself whilst dancing. I wanted to really bring the numbers to life, but also highlight the importance of them in any performance especially on stage. It is bringing to light an element that usually hidden from an audience and that is the counts the dancer is following. The reason I have investigated this relationship so intently is that they are both passions of mine. And understanding them both at similar levels means that I can interpret them in new and exciting ways. Moving forward I pose the question how do you design dance?
