Dancing Shapes
I started to explore dance through shapes and symbols to design a new language. One that could be universal and simple. I wanted to move away from dancers and choreography as I felt too close to the subject. Instead, I focused on how the everyday person dances or interacts with movement. I was asked, how do I teach someone to dance? My answer was “They copy what I am doing”. In the most basic form, dance transcends and evolves purely through the act of copying. I started to work towards an interactive installation, whereby a passerby would follow the movement and feel the need to interact with it. I decided to use basic forms (circle, square, triangle) to show just how simple movement is. There is nothing complex or unnatural about interacting with these shapes, as they are so simple to us. And the colours are bright and bold to stand out from a glum London. The proposals I’ve designed are intended for somewhere like Coal Drops Yard.
